Celine’s Matelassé Monochrome is the new It Bag to know

Celine has launched its latest It Bag offering, coming in the form of the suave Matelassé Monochrome Celine Bag, the first of a new line launched this season. Adding to the Maison’s existing collection of iconic bags, it was one of the key accessories to be featured at the Winter 22 runway show earlier this year.

The shoulder bag is enwrapped with a fresh graphic goatskin quilting and metal lettering in the monochrome Celine logo, adorned with an oversized chain strap, allowing the bag to be worn cross-body depending on the desires of the wearer. First seen on the arm of BLACKPINK’s Lisa at the Maison’s runway show held at the Hôtel de la Marine and Hôtel National des Invalide, the piece emerged as a standout of the collection, now a favourite of the likes of Kaia Gerber and the It Girl set.

The Matelassé-style mimics the hand-stitched quilts made in France’s oldest city, Marseilles, and is a weaving technique whereby a pattern is yielded to appear quilted or padded, with the style achieved either by hand, on a jacquard loom or through employing a quilting machine. It is a true feat of artisanal craftsmanship, shining through in the make of its namesake bag.

Versatility is key with any handbag, and the Matelassé Monochrome bag is no exception. Offered in a black and nude quilted goatskin option, it allows shoppers to establish how they envision the piece in their wardrobe: a nude version for day-to-day use in the sunshine, the black perhaps a new go-to evening bag of choice. The possibilities are endless.

The first bag to feature the Celine name in a bold, dominant font across the front of the accessory, it is a testament to the subtle-yet-loaded design of Creative Director, Hedi Slimane, and how Celine has been imagined under his directorship.
