EVERY LOOK FROM CELINE SPRING/SUMMER 2022

FOR HIS LATEST COLLECTION, CREATIVE DIRECTOR HEDI SLIMANE STAYED TRUE TO FRENCH CLASSICS TO HONOR A HISTORIC FRENCH CITY

Celine’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection was yet another exercise in French-girl chic. However, for this particular show, Creative Director Hedi Slimane was directly inspired by the iconic French city of Nice. Entitled, “Baie des Anges,” or “Angel’s Bay,” the show was held on the city’s historic Promenade des Anglais along the Mediterranean Coast. This setting is particularly notable in-relation to the collection. On the Promenade des Anglais lies the centarian palace, Le Negresco, which was designed and built by Henri Alexandre Negrescu and Dutch architect Edouard-Jean Niermans. Since opening its doors in 1913, Le Negresco has been an enduring symbol for the “Belle Epoque” and Neo-Classical movements on the French Riviera, as well as a center for international, artists, politicians, and royalty.

Slimane’s most recent collection reflected this historic French legacy, by staying true to classic French styling and silhouettes. This means that the show was largely dominated by a luxurious array of simple, sexy, and casual garments. For instance, straight-cut washed denim jeans were paired with sensual black tops and looked effortlessly cool. Likewise, leather pencil skirts were accompanied by sheer or cropped tops to emphasize the simple, yet sexy character of the French aesthetic.

Needless to say, the “Baie des Anges” Spring/Summer 2022 show from Celine was another showcase of the brand’s commitment to the French aesthetic. The show’s location on the historic Promenade des Anglais in Nice highlighted this dedication by connecting the garments themselves directly to the artistic and architectural history of France. This collection continued to prove that Celine is not your average label, but a French staple.
