Moncler Launches Maya 70 Jacket by Pierpaolo Piccioli

Crafted with nylon laqué padded squares and manually applied fabric knots.

As part of Moncler (MILAN:MONC.MI -1.19%) ‘s 70th-anniversary celebration, the Italian outerwear label has dispatched the Moncler Maya 70 Collaborations: a series of seven reinterpretations of the label’s signature Maya jacket by seven industry-leading visionaries. In its sixth iteration, the initiative introduces a stripped-back take on the silhouette by Pierpaolo Piccioli, out November 19.

Piccioli’s reinvention is couture yet nonchalant, tweaking the coat with off-white padded squares yet still letting the Moncler classic do the talking. With craftsmanship at the fore, each nylon laqué component is manually fastened with knots, offering the innovative outerwear construction a bouncy cadence.

“The major challenge was the padded squares, profiled in the same fabric, joined together with manually applied fabric knots. I am fascinated by sport outerwear opportunities: within this frame, concrete benefits and stylish gems come together,” says Pierpaolo Piccioli, who selected supermodel Kirsten McMenamy to wear the design in the campaign.

“Kirsten is an artist, an interpreter: she was born for the scene and perfectly knows how to have fun on the set,” he added. “Her versatile, histrionic aura permeates the atmosphere with contagious energy. That energy is what makes our job not only quality-driven, but funny and unique.”

In 1990, Piccioli, who attended the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, set up shop at Fendi, where he worked on the brand’s accessory offerings. Upon contact with high Italian craftsmanship, the burgeoning designer built the foundation for his modern-day success, ultimately landing at the helm of Valentino‘s emerging accessories line. In 2008, he was nominated Valentino co-creative director; and after gaining international acclaim at the Maison, Piccioli was named the sole creative director in 2016.

In addition to Piccioli, Moncler has tapped Thom Browne, Hiroshi Fujiwara for FRGMT, Rick Owens, Francesco Ragazzi for Palm Angels, Giambattista Valli and Pharrell Williams for Maya 70 reinventions.

The Moncler Maya 70 by Pierpaolo Piccioli drops in stores and on Moncler’s website on November 19. Take a look at the celebratory silhouette in the gallery above.
