Swarovski recently collaborated with fashion icon Donatella Versace to design the debutantes' tiara for the 2019 Vienna Opera Ball, stated the Swarovski website. Like each year, this year too, the brand collaborated with a designer to do the needful.
Known for her opulent designs globally, Versace looked to Richard Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” opera to draw inspiration. “This installment is the first of four music dramas within the Der Ring des Nibelungen opera cycle and follows the character Alberich on his journey to steal a sacred golden bounty that is protected by three Rhine maidens. During a key scene, a beam of light permeates the depths of the Rhine to reveal the gilded treasure in the most spectacular way,” says the website.
Versace transformed the visually stunning act using 380 Swarovski crystals representing a treasure-like centerpiece illuminated by sparkling rays of sunshine and shimmering blue crystal waves, described the website.
Maria Großbauer, Organizer of the Vienna Opera Ball was quoted as saying by the website, “I am overjoyed that Donatella Versace has implemented my request for the use of imagery from Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” in such dramatic fashion,” “Rhine gold and Rhine maidens against a backdrop of Italian opulence! It is such a joy for me to keep taking new inspiration from the rich diversity of operas to work with Swarovski on the design of the debutantes’ tiaras - and in doing so reaffirm the Opera Ball name.”
It is interesting to note that ever since the 1950s, Swarovski has collaborated with various respectable international designers year after year to add some sparkle to the debutante’s tiaras. Designers who have had the opportunity to design the tiaras earlier are late Karl Lagerfeld, Stephen Webster, Dolce & Gabbana, and Shaun Leane.
“Special guest Elle Macpherson celebrated Conscious Luxury at this year’s event by wearing selected Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry pieces crafted with responsibly sourced Swarovski Created Diamonds. Her look featured the Art Deco Bracelet and Duchesse Ring as well as the Angel Ring designed by actress Penelope Cruz,” informed the website.
“We are honored and delighted that with Donatella Versace we have added another exceptional designer for the creation of the swarovski tiara ,” Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board was quoted as saying.
