Unveiled today, the Bones and All star appears on the cover of Dazed’s ‘beautiful issue’ wearing an anthurium flower dress from Jonathan Anderson’s viral Loewe Spring/Summer 2023 collection

After a slew of star-studded covers featuring Doja Cat, Tems, the Salone Flying Stars and Frost Children, today Dazed has released the final Winter 2022 cover, featuring young Canadian actress Taylor Russell. The fashion story, lensed by Carlijn Jacobs and styled by Dazed fashion director Imruh Asha, sees Russell donning looks from Loewe’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection – a surreal, slightly phallic ode to the anthurium flower shown in Paris at the end of September – which Russell opened for.

Emerging from a terracotta plant pot, or laying on a bed of anthurium flowers, the shoot sees the actress channelling the bold, eccentric Loewe woman. Weeks after the S/S23 show, Loewe named Russell as their new global ambassador, with an earnest statement from the Spanish fashion house’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson: “I first met Taylor through a very dear friend of ours, Luca Guadagnino. I’ve never been so inspired by someone – it was the start of a very special friendship. I’m so proud that she agreed to open the S/S23 show, and excited to have her join the Loewe family.”

As the star of Guadagnino’s latest cinematic venture Bones and All – which was released in UK cinemas last week – Russell plays Maren, a dejected young cannibal disowned by her family who finds kinship (and romance) in Lee, a fellow ‘eater’ played by Timothée Chalamet. “I loved how seemingly misunderstood she was, and that she represented this sort of isolation I feel acutely for whatever reason in my life,” Russell told Dazed in the accompanying interview. “I’m not as peculiar as Maren and her wants. But the role did ease something in me.” Earlier this month, Russell appeared in Loewe’s Spring/Summer 2023 pre-collection campaign alongside Guadagnino and Chloë Sevigny, who also stars in Bones and All.

In the interview, Russell also touches on the process of working with Guadagnino, who allegedly provided the actress with a “film bible” in preparation for her role, which included Agnes Varda’s Vagabond, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman and Robert Bresson’s A Man Escaped. “What’s interesting about all those movies, what ties them together, is that all the characters are very much in their bodies, in a way that feels kind of jolted – like there’s a bird trapped inside them,” she says.
